(If you are unfamiliar with Nola Girl Updates, click to find out more. Basically, I am remodeling/redecorating our home.)
I have a modest kitchen, and I don't mind that. It's not big, but it's not too small either. The lack of cabinet space is another story. Shortly after moving in and realizing that I had lots of stuff (especially small appliances) that had nowhere to go, I got this black shelving unit. When I started meeting other people in the neighborhood (in the same lack-of-kitchen-storage predicament), I saw that one or two had done the same.
The shelves have served us well, but the cluttered look, having all of that "stuff" visible and the shelves taking up a huge amount of space, was started to bother me. After trying to figure out what in the world I could do instead, and going through different options in my head (and budget!), I decided to take the bedroom armoire that houses a television and DVDs and put it in the kitchen in place of the shelves.
I didn't think to take before photos, except for the actual shelving unit, so I have been searching for a few photos that had the kitchen in the background. Here are a few that will have to do:
Note the crazy mix & match chairs in this one, and the picture on the back wall which is nice, but has no frame and is also a little formal for this kitchen. Lol! Also you can see how close the table has to be to that wall on the right, because of the big shelving unit!
So ya ready for the new look? I hung some new things on the wall, painted all of the chairs black so they are at least coordinated, and brought in a bench that my mother gave me because she was getting something new for her porch. I am testing out the bench for a bit to see if I really want it in my kitchen, or if I want to put it outside. If I keep it in the kitchen, I will paint it. And of course, the armoire. Drum roll please . . .
I am loving it! The room looks and feels so much more spacious now. The small appliances are in that bottom cabinet, which has a shelf for double-duty storage. The top shelf of the armoire is full of my cookbooks, as you can see. I put some jars of beans and grains just to look nice. The rest of the stuff that was on the old black shelves, I rearranged my cabinet space and made room for them.
I painted that back wall deep red shortly after we moved in. I love adding color! Dark colors make a room look smaller though, so that's why it is only on one wall. Now I want to paint the other walls a really light tan, and stain the molding to look like a dark wood, almost matching the armoire.
What has become of the bedroom that is now missing an armoire for the television, you ask? Stay tuned to see what I am doing with that space in its place!
Oh and just so ya know: I am indulging in topics other than homeschooling simply because it is summer. We will resume our regularly scheduled programming of daily homeschool posts, with a little sprinkle of this other stuff every now and then, starting in August!
Hope everyone is having a super summer!
